John Rice Kerr

John Rice Kerr served as the first superintendent at KSD from 1823 to 1833.
Kerr was born in Virginia on August 1, 1770. He married Sarah Henderson, daughter of
Bennett Henderson, a Revolutionary soldier, on December 1, 1795. They moved to
Kentucky in 1814. He was the pastor of a Presbyterian Church at Glasgow, Kentucky
from 1814-1823. His wife died on August 15, 1817 and he remarried to Miss Frances
Powell in 1819. He served as a teacher of KSD from 1823-1833. John Kerr died
of Asiatic cholera in June 28, 1833. His wife died two days later from the same
diseases. Their grave can still be seen in McDowell Park, Danville, Kentucky.
