In this class, students practice nine reading strategies to help them understand the text they read. They use them daily and are asked to explain the strategies on a regular basis. Students read texts from various fiction genres - fantasy, realistic fiction, historical fiction and science fiction. Students read various non-fiction texts from magazines, newspapers, textbooks and practical living resources (recipes, calendars, schedules, etc.). Students are given many opportunities to respond to their readings with journals and logs. They also demonstrate their understanding through mini projects, daily assessments and story/vocabulary quizzes. As part of the emphasis on literacy for our students, there are weekly opportunities to read independently for enjoyment and to enjoy being read to as well.
