At KSD, all middle school reading classes use the modified 4 Block Reading Program. Students engage in Word Work, Guided Reading, Writing, and Self Selected Reading each day. My reading class learns and uses See the Sound/Visual Phonics during Word Work, along with other vocabulary building strategies.
My reading class uses a variety of reading materials. We use Sourcebook which helps guide students through different reading strategies and helps students realize which strategies they need to develop. We use Time for Kids for informational reading and to keep up with current issues around the country. We also try to read a chapter book each quarter. Students are expected to read assigned chapters each week while we are going through a chapter book. Class time is spent teaching vocabulary and figurative langauge from the assigned chapters, making connections, and discussing what has been read.
In addition to reading class, we have other literacy based activities to help our students improve their reading skills. These include book talks twice a year, quarterly spelling bees, and the celebration of International Literacy Day.
Please check that your child is completing their reading log. This is a homework assignment! Any adult who sees the student read may sign (parents, student life staff, athletic coach when they have away games, etc.) Reading log will begin August 15.
